I have made the following experience , I have migrate CATIAV5R16 -> V5R18SP7 Suzuki 2hp outboard manual.

1) Open a 'CATIA-R16' CATDrawing with Chinese Caracters , FontMicrosoft Sans Serif
=> chinese caracters looks OK

2) Copy/Paste an existing Text with Chinese
=> OK
3) Create a new Texte , edit the Text sting and key Chinesecaracters , change font to SansSerif
=> in the Text editor , I see the Chinese caracters , in CATIA ,I get only _ , or 'boxes' or ' ' ..
=> Solution, I have to find a new policy in CATIA to supportChinese caracters , I found SimHei , which looks good Banner creating tool.
Explanation : In fact CATIA behaviour has changed on R18 , tosupport TrueType caracters on UNIX see APAR HD77587
To key 'specific' caracters , usually , I use Microsoft Word ,and then Copy-Paste into CATIA , and Test CATIA Font

Drafting(IntDraft) / Chinese characters with Arial
fonts display error in V5R18
.
Till R17
On UNIX :True Type Fonts were not supported.
On Windows : True type fonts were displayed using
windows functionality ( If some characters were
missing in any TTFs, then it is replaced by
character from associated fonts mentioned in
Windows registry)
.
On R18
we have implemented our own algorithm to display
True type fonts.
True Type Fonts are supported on UNIX.
Characters are displayed if they are present in in
given font file otherwise default character is
displayed
.
However in R18, If our algorithm does not find
certain letter in given font, letter is not displayed at
all and default character is shown
.
Development Proposal
.
1.)If character is not found in given font, find out
the associated font information from registry
2.)Display character using associated fonts
3.)Generally these associated fonts are of type
True Type Collection. So provide support to read
true type collection fonts
